Wildfire Danger In NJ
There have been 336 wildfires so far this year in New Jersey. State Fire Warden Gregory McLaughlin says the risk of woodlands fires is high now because the hot weather and low humidity causes combustible material on the forest floor to dry out quickly. McLaughlin says the wildfire danger usually remains high until around Memorial Day. He says 98 percent of wildfires are caused by humans. He says people might not realize ashes or coals from their barbecue grills are still hot. If you live near a wooded area, take some simple precautions such as cleaning up dead leaves around your house, cleaning the pine needles out of your gutters, cutting dead branches off of the trees, and keeping your plants watered and hydrated.
