Winter Water Damage
Winter is on its way and so is the wet weather! Most of us usually equate spring with wet weather due to “May Showers” but most of us do not think of the wet weather in the winter when it comes to snow. The ice, sleet, flurries, and heavy winter storms all lead to the potential for water damage to our homes and businesses.
When surface temperatures are just above freezing, snow can melt slightly, and the runoff has to go somewhere. That random warmer day results in a significant amount of water that is hard for it to seep into the ground due to the ground being frozen and this can easily lead to basements and crawl spaces that can flood when the water has nowhere else to go. This winter water affects gutters and downspouts that may be blocked with ice and leaves that have fallen and clogged them. Roofs may be affected as the weight of un-melted snow puts extra strain on them and the water can find its way into your attic.
One tip for reducing the likelihood of roof and attic damage is to essentially clean your gutters, reducing the chance of ice dams forming. Secondly, ensure that your attic is well ventilated, insulated and properly heated. If your attic is not trapping warm, moist air that melts water that will freeze on the eaves it will help you avoid damage.
