Putting out Fires

4/6/2016 (Permalink)

Imagine a long day at work.  You’re tired, you’re grumpy, and you’re hungry.  You come home and preheat your oven so you can pop in something quick.  You run upstairs to get changed into your favorite old sweats.  Within minutes, your smoke alarm starts beeping loudly.  Your heart is in your throat as you grab your shoes and your phone and head back downstairs.  The kitchen is filled with smoke and the stove is on fire!  You call 911 as you head out the door and thank your lucky stars that they arrive quickly and put out the fire.  Now what?

The first 48 hours after a fire damage can make the difference between restoring versus replacing your property and personal belongings.  Attempting to clean up the damage yourself can actually create further damage.  So after the first wave of heroes have rescued the property, let professionals help you restore it.  SERVPRO of Bordentown / Pemberton specializes in restoring contents damaged by water, fire, or mold. Our expertise and “restore” versus “replace” mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. We pretest your belongings to determine what items we can restore to pre-fire condition. We use several methods of cleaning your contents, including:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can’t withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.

A fire damage will not only wreak havoc on your home, but also on your emotions.  Fear, uncertainty, stress, and doubt can overwhelm homeowners long after the flames have been extinguished and the smoke has cleared.  The staff of SERVPRO of Bordentown/Pemberton strives to restore not only your home, but your peace of mind as well, to make it like it never even happened.  Until we arrive at your home, there are a few steps you can take to minimize any further damage.

    • Limit movement in your home to prevent soot particles from spreading and additional damage from occurring.
    • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs and high traffic areas and upholstery.
    • Coat chrome faucets, trim and appliances with petroleum jelly or oil.
    • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet.
    • Do not wash any walls or painted surfaces.
    •  Do not shampoo carpet or upholstery.
    •  Do not clean any electrical equipment.
    •  Do not send clothing to a dry cleaner since improper cleaning may set smoke odor.

When a fire takes control of your life, SERVPRO of Bordentown/Pemberton will help take it back.
